It looks like 2020 is going to be a stellar year for gaming. Not that 2019 didn’t have some great games — I especially loved The Outer Worlds and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — but for me and my taste, it was a slow year. That’s why I’m so excited to look ahead at all the great games coming out in the next 12 months! Here are my most anticipated titles… =)
Empire of Sin
This turn-based game, set in Prohibition-Era Chicago, looks like a fun combo of XCOM gameplay and entertaining story. The setting is what really intrigues me here. I’ve played a few turn-based games over the years, but it’s not my favorite style — I have to fall in love with the narrative to feel like I’m really there. Empire of Sin looks like it will do a great job of transporting you to a world we don’t see enough of in video games!
With their Witcher games, CD Projekt RED became one of my favorite game development studios. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was phenomenal in how it handled engagement and storytelling in the midst of a huge open world. That’s why I’m so excited to play their new game Cyberpunk 2077, which looks to combine a strong narrative, meaningful decision-making, and exploration with a brand new cyberpunk style.
This beautiful top-down game, created by Luis Antonio, looks like a dark version of Groundhog Day. Stuck in a 12-minute time loop, you experience the same scenario over and over — dinner with your newly-pregnant wife, a discussion about her father’s death — before police come knocking and you’re beaten to death. It’s clear something more is going on, but it seems like you’ll have to explore the scenario in different ways to understand everything.
Watch Dogs Legion
I cannot wait for this game. Watch Dogs Legion is unleashing a brand new concept: anyone in the game is a playable character. You go around recruiting NPCs — each one has their own backstory and skills — and turning them into playable characters who you then use to carry out missions. The fact that it’s set in post-Brexit London makes it even more appealing. (I used to live in London and will take any chance I get to revisit it, even virtually.) Legion just looks like such a fun time, I can’t wait to wreak havoc with a carefully-selected squad of misfits, nerds, and grannies.
Note: Ubisoft has delayed this game for extra development time, which mean it might not come out until as late as early 2021… but I’m crossing my fingers it will still come out this year!
We have to wait until the end of the year for this one, as it will be a launch release with the new Xbox Series X — but I have a feeling it will be worth the wait. My husband got me into Halo when we first started dating a few years ago; we played through the Master Chief collection together, and now we’re replaying Halo Reach as well. If it’s Halo, I’m in. Watching the trailer, it looks like Infinite will include some emotional storytelling, something I’ve always enjoyed about the series even when it’s not necessarily the focus. And seeing Master Chief in the trailer… I just can’t wait. ♥
What games are you looking forward to this year?
