What's New

What’s New — March 2017

Happy springtime, everybody!

So I have no idea why I made such a fuss about Horizon Zero Dawn last month, because it came out on the last day of last month… which means really, it’s March that’s going to be totally full of this game. I am so excited about finally playing it. I ordered the Collector’s Edition and will have a quick review of all the goodies in it up later this week. =)

forhonor-guard-breakLast month I got very into the video game For Honor. You can read my full review here. I also tried Elder Scrolls Online at long last, but I haven’t played much of it as I am, as usual, overloaded with new games to play! I’ll probably have some more posts and some gameplay up later this month as I master my Nobushi class. It’s just so addicting, guys. I can’t recommend the game enough!

I also read (or listened to, since it was an audiobook) Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale, which was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. It depicts a near-future dystopia in which women are treated as property. I highly recommend it, and if you enjoy audiobooks, Claire Danes’ narration was perfect. I wish she narrated more books.

I’m also reading the next book in Becky Chambers’ series, after picking up The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet last year. So far, I’m enjoying A Closed and Common Orbit, although it’s not quite as much fun or as rich as the first book. I’m intrigued by the strength of the story so far, though! (You can read more of my thoughts about these books here.)

Mass-Effect-Andromeda-1.pngThis month, in addition to Horizon finally being on my PlayStation 4 and all over my TV screen, I am drooling to think about Mass Effect Andromeda. It comes out toward the end of the month, and… well, you guys know by now that I am totally in love with everything Mass Effect! My main concern right now is figuring out who I’m going to romance. I want to know everything about every character.

That’s pretty much all that’s on my radar right now. Some personal family emergency stuff went down for me last month, which has been occupying a lot of my time and brain space. It is going okay though, and I am relieved for my family about that. But I am also happy to get back to my regular life, my writing, my working out, and my video games.

What’s on your agenda for March? And also if anyone else is playing either Horizon or Mass Effect, let’s compare notes on Twitter or in the comments here! I love to hear how other people play RPGs and where our choices and paths may differ. =)

  1. Sorry to hear about your family troubles. :( A lot of people I know seem to be having crises like that lately.

On a lighter note, I, too, am looking forward to Andromeda. I’ve been very skeptical about it from the start, but I’m starting to feel some genuine excitement for it. Oddly the combat is what’s grabbing my attention the most right now. I’ve spent years ragging on Bioware’s combat, but the previews for Andromeda’s look very cool, and I love that they’re getting rid of rigid classes.

Also like you, I am trying to figure out who I’d like to romance, but it’s proving difficult. They’re being oddly cagey about the cast this time. I remember obsessing over Sera months before Inquisition released, but I’m still having a hard time developing even a basic impression of any of the Andromeda characters. So far all I’ve determined is that Cora has awesome hair and Vetra sounds like she might maybe be interesting but I don’t know.

Trying to decide whether I want to be male or female, too. I’m slightly leaning toward female cause the voice actress also played the main character in The Park, which I loved, but from what I’ve heard the male voice also seems pretty good.

In the meanwhile, I’ve made a brief return to WoW. Want to get caught up on the current content before the next big patch. Feeling a little underwhelmed by the final leg of the Suramar story so far (not sure why), but it is nice to see Lady Liadrin getting some screentime for once. I always felt she had such potential.

Beyond that, I’m still rereading the Dark Templar books (though nearly done — says something to how good they are that I’ve blitzed through them so fast) and rewatching Continuum. In the middle of season two right now and glad to see Emily again. I like that actress. And I’m looking forward to seeing Logan sometime this month. Would love to see it with my father (he’s the one that got me into X-Men), but I doubt his schedule will allow for that.

    1. Yes I know what you mean about Bioware being petty close mouthed about the cast of characters so far. I think that’s good in a way, but as a fan I am of course dying for more info even if it’s not good for me! I will play female, I always do when I can. I’ll be curious to hear what you think of the game and which gender you end up playing, etc! Anyway, I’m also looking forward to seeing Logan. I was supposed to see it tomorrow but family stuff came up, so I’ll probably postpone a week! Thanks for the reply. :)

      1. I’ll undoubtedly do a full review on my blog once I finish Andromeda, and I’ve been talking to my editor about possibly doing an article on it for MMO Bro too. Plus if it’s anything like Inquisition I might do some more posts after that. So I’m sure you’ll have plenty of opportunity to hear my thoughts on the game.

Not like I was ever shy about my opinions, as my novel-length comments here show.

  2. I’m really enjoying Horizon thus far. There is a ton of depth and strategy to the combat and I love the world. It’s wonderful and intriguing. Going to be juggling that and Zelda plus whatever other Switch games I try/rent in March.

    1. Yeah I agree, I only just started Horizon but it’s incredible so far. I’m curious to hear about Zelda and the Switch. I’ve been reading great reviews, though I won’t have time to play it for awhile.

  3. Horizon and Mass Effect are on my docket this month. I’m going to wait a bit to snag a Switch so I’ll be hitting up Zelda later. I do have Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 HD Remixes on tap at the end of March though so, lots of long form gaming for me this month.

    1. Yep that’s what I’m doing with the Switch and Zelda too. I’ll get to them eventually. Have fun with Horizon and Mass Effect! Sounds like we have similar gaming tastes.

  4. I’m sorry about your personal family troubles, but I’m glad everything turned out okay in the end. :) And yes, Mass Effect countdown has gotten closer to being a reality! Few more weeks! :D It’s so hard to wait when we’re so close, especially with all the news and videos we keep getting lately. We’ll definitely compare notes as we play!
