Hi, and welcome to Robo♥beat! I’m so happy you’re here.
Before we get into it, I have a question for you.
When did you last do something just for fun?
Not something productive. Not exercising because you should, or reading because it makes you smarter. I’m talking about pure, unabashed, losing-track-of-time kind of fun. The kind of fun you had as a kid, before taxes and rent and kids and jobs.
If you’re drawing a blank, you’re not alone.
I felt the same way just a couple years ago. I was building a new career as an independent author while learning to be a mom for the first time. I loved my life. But my time was not my own, and the idea of “fun” felt frivolous and foreign. Gaming time went out the window.
But I started to miss it.
And not just gaming—I missed who I was when I played. That version of me was fun. She made time for herself. She experienced joy. She laughed more. She just played, in a way I almost forgot how to do.
That’s why, after five years away, I came back to this gaming blog.
Robo♥beat is a space for adults who are ready to reconnect with their imagination—and specifically, to rediscover the magic of video games. Maybe you used to play as a teenager and drifted away when real life got hard. Maybe you’ve always been curious but never knew where to start. Maybe you’re a parent watching your kid play and thinking, I kind of want to do that.
Whatever brought you here, just remember this:
It is not too late. You are not too old. You don’t have to earn the right to play.
I’m Ash, and I came to gaming late.
I didn’t grow up with a controller in my hand. I discovered video games in my twenties when I stumbled across Dragon Age: Origins, a game where you play a fantasy story, make decisions, have conversations, and fall in love with fictional characters. I started it on my birthday and didn’t come up for air for weeks.
That was over 15 years ago. Since then, I’ve played over 100 games across all kinds of genres, worked in the game industry for six years, flew to Poland to review The Witcher 3 (my name is even in the credits—I still squeal when I see it!), and designed web pages for PlayStation for three years. I also got married and had a son. And I still game—only now, it’s after bedtime and on weekends, in those stolen pockets of time that are entirely mine.
Because here’s what I’ve learned:
You don’t need hours of free time to be a gamer. You just need to give yourself permission, because no one else will.
And with the right game, you can bring real magic into your life again.
